Nijmegen is the proud bearer of the title of oldest city in the
Netherlands.
About 2000 years ago, the Romains founded a settlement, bestowed
it with
city rights, and named it Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum.
The city sits on the border with the Waal river, in a pretty
forested and hilly area.
In 2008 there were about 160,000 inhabitants, many of whom
were university
students.
Every summer Nijmegen hosts the Four Days Marches, in which 40,000
people from
all over the world participate. During four days, participants walk
trajectories in the
surroundings of Nijmegen. Walking distances are 30, 40 and 50
kilometers. |
